My January Obsessions
I’m a fairly obsessive person.
I can admit that and feel no shame whatsoever.
It’s not out of control, or anything, but if I like something enough you’re bound to hear about it at one point.
As it turns out, I find that there are new things I become obsessed with on a regular basis – hair styles, skin care products, scents.. basically anything. It’s the last day of January, and since we’re in a new year, I thought I’d start a new series of posts – My Monthly Obsessions.
Here are my January obsessions.
It’s either the messy bun or the messy half-bun (where just half your hair is up and in a messy bun).
You guys don’t even know.
They’ve been my go-to hair styles all month – partially because I’m too lazy to actually try and do anything with my hair, and partially because I’ve been pretty busy this month and don’t really want to spend time doing anything with my hair. Kate over at The Small Things Blog has a really easy messy bun tutorial. While you’re at it, check out her other hair tutorials; this girl knows what she’s talking about.
I’ve got super thin, fine hair too, so sometimes it’s hard to find a good brush. I absolutely love this one, and would highly recommend it to anyone with hair similar to mine. I found mine at Winners (department store in Canada), so your best bet is to try there, or try online.
EVERYTHING ROSE GOLD
I don’t wear jewelry often; to be honest, I think the only thing I really wear is earrings. I’d never been a watch person, but I figured since I’m now an adult, I should probably own one.
I found these earrings at Shoppers (a drug store here in Canada), and they only cost $10! It’s hard to see in the photos, but they’re pinkish/gold – but not quite rose gold. They catch all of the light and sparkle and shine. I’m in love.
The watch is from Fossil. I bought it back in December as an early Christmas present from my parents (I wanted a watch, there is no Fossil in Sudbury so I bought it in Toronto), but I couldn’t wear it until my tattoo healed up. Like I mentioned before, I never wore a watch; now, if I forget my watch at home, I feel naked.
Please take notice that even my hair elastics have a light, gold-ish tint to them.
AVEENO SKIN RELIEF MOISTURIZING LOTION
My go to for all of the dry skin I suffered from this winter.
After my showers, I’ll slather this lotion all over. I really do feel a difference, especially after I shave my legs; they stay smoother much longer, and the skin isn’t as dry as it usually is.
I have this huge bottle that I keep in my room, a smaller purse-sized bottle that I keep in my purse, and then I have an even smaller one that I keep in my apron at work.
Aveeno has saved my life.
SMITH’S ROSEBUD SALVE
This little guy has saved my lips (and cuticles!) something fierce this winter.
Not only is it extremely moisturizing, it’s got a nice, light rosy scent to it. It’s very similar to a petroleum-jelly-type product, but much less petroleum-y. Does that makes sense?
I know people who swear by putting Vaseline on their lips, but I can’t stand it: it tastes gross. Like, really gross. This Rosebud Salve doesn’t really have a taste, but it’s not gross. This tin has lasted me well over a year, and it’s definitely my go to. I have a smaller one in my work apron as well.
You can purchase this product at Sephora. I’m sure it’s available elsewhere, but I’ve only ever seen it at Sephora.
MAYBELLINE COLORBLUR IN “PLUM, PLEASE”
I already wrote a post about how much I love this product (just click right here and you can read all about it), but it’s been my right-hand lipstick all winter. It’s the perfect plum colour: it’s great on every skin tone, and the darker the lips, the lighter my eyes look.
I really love a bold lip paired with a simple eye.
I’ll figure out my camera eventually, and will post super simple tutorials for classic looks.
THE BODY SHOP’S VITAMIN E MOISTURE MASK
I’ve been using this for a few months now, and not just January, and I’m pretty impressed with how well this product works (click here for a more detailed product review).
I mentioned before that my skin gets really dry, so I try to use this once or twice a week to keep the skin on my face moisturized. Vitamin E is amazing for your skin, and this product isn’t loaded with scents or heavy creams – it’s a nice, light moisturizer that you put on your face at the end of your nighttime skincare routine, and just let it sink in. The next morning, you skin will be so smooth – SO SMOOTH.
Just do me a solid and trust me on this.
BATH AND BODY WORKS ‘WINTER’ CANDLE
The candle in the photo is the third one I’ve burned through. It’s a spicy, fresh, wintery smell that reminds you of being outside without having to actually step outside and freeze to death.
It’s got at least 8 hours of burning time for being such a small candle.
I love candles, and I love to switch up scents every once in a while so I tend to buy the smaller ones; however, this time, I should have purchased the three-wick candles, because this one just doesn’t last. And now, since the “season” is over (in store, at least), it’s getting harder and harder to find them.
I guess that means I need a new scent for February.
Aaaaand there you have them.
The things I’ve been obsessed with the most this January.
I’m excited to keep this going as a monthly post – see how my style/tastes evolve, see what movies or books I’m into, and a whole bunch of other things. Really, the sky’s the limit.
What were you obsessed with this month?
Is there anything you’d recommend to people skin/hair/makeup wise?
