It’s a grey, rainy Monday night in Toronto, but my kitchen smells like sugar cookies (and my mouth has the lingering taste of Sauvignon Blanc). I spent the day doing laundry and vacuuming and cleaning the litter box and washing multiple stacks of dishes. So what am I doing to make time for myself and relax?
Well, I’ll tell you. Here’s my secret to relaxing:
I poured myself a glass (or three, whatever) of wine and baked some sugar cookies.
This recipe for sugar cookies is one of the best that I’ve gotten my hands on. They’re delightfully soft and seem to crumble in your mouth – not in the this-is-so-dry-it-doesn’t-stay-together crumble, but the oh-my-goodness-this-is-so-soft-it’s-like-it’s-melting kind of crumble.
I know baking sounds like work, but it is totally relaxing for me. It’s one of those activities that needs my complete attention so I don’t screw up, but is probably the most rewarding in the long run.
Anyway, while I was
fooling around in the kitchen baking, I came up with the best baking hack ever.
Ready for it? Reaaaady?
ADD WINE TO EVERYTHING.
JUST TRUST ME.
Alright, I’m exaggerating. You caught me!
As much as I love wine (and I loooove wine), me saying to add it to everything just makes me sound like an alcoholic, and that is up for discussion.
I have like three-four glasses of wine a week, it’s fine. I promise.
BUT – I’m not joking about adding wine, though; I was topping my glass up and
drunkenly accidentally got a bit of it into the bowl I happened to be making my frosting in.
My first reaction was that I was screwed, and would have to either a) remake the frosting, or b) have frosting-less sugar cookies. No one likes frosting-less sugar cookies, so I was ultra-stoked when I tried it and realized it only made it better. AAAAND – instead of using milk in my simple icing sugar frosting recipe, I used cinnamon bun flavored coffee cream, so it’s just a delicious mixture of flavors in one bite.
Plus, the sugar cookies were soft and not too sweet, and just encompassed the day perfectly. It’s been so long since I’ve been able to kind of relax. Okay, okay – yesterday I had a day off and did nothing, BUT – it’s more satisfying to relax after being productive and active all day.
But, now it’s almost 10pm, and I just wanna curl up in bed, cuddle up with my boy and my fur-girl, and throw something on Netflix until I pass out.
